Storm Prep Tips: How We Get Ready for Big Winter Weather

When a big winter storm is headed our way, especially one calling for 18 inches of snow, we don’t panic…we prepare. A little planning ahead can save you from frozen pipes, spoiled food, and scrambling in the dark if the power goes out.

Here are the storm prep tips we rely on every time severe winter weather is in the forecast.

1. Prep Outside First

Before the snow really starts coming down, we make sure all our outdoor equipment is ready to go. Snow blowers are fueled up, tested, and staged where they’re easy to grab once the driveway fills in. Doing this early means no fighting with frozen equipment later when visibility is low and temps drop fast.

Pro tip: Clear space in your garage ahead of time so you’re not digging things out mid-storm.

2. Protect Your Pipes

Frozen pipes are one of the biggest (and most expensive) winter storm issues.

  • Open sink cabinets to allow warm air to circulate around plumbing.
  • Set faucets to a slow drip. Moving water is much less likely to freeze.
  • Pay extra attention to sinks on exterior walls.

This small step can make a huge difference during extended cold snaps.

3. Have Reliable Backup Power

Power outages are common during heavy snow and ice, so having portable power sources is key. We keep battery-powered power stations charged and ready so we can:

  • Charge phones, tablets, and laptops
  • Run small appliances if needed
  • Keep essentials powered without stress

Some portable power stations can even help keep your refrigerator running for a period of time, which is a lifesaver during longer outages.

4. Charge All the Batteries

If you use cordless tools, now is the time to charge every battery you own. Extra batteries mean:

  • More light
  • More power
  • Less worry

We charge everything ahead of the storm so we’re not rationing power when we need it most.

5. Stock Up on Light Sources

Flashlights are non-negotiable during a winter storm. We keep several on hand and spread them throughout the house so they’re always within reach. Battery-powered work lights are especially helpful. They light up entire rooms and make evenings without power much more manageable.

6. Store Water for Emergencies

If you lose power or water pressure, having water ready is critical. One easy trick:

  • Fill your bathtub with water before the storm hits.

This water can be used to manually flush toilets or for basic cleaning if needed.

7. Think Through Comfort, Not Just Survival

Storm prep isn’t only about emergencies, it’s also about staying comfortable. Warm blankets, easy meals, charged devices, and good lighting go a long way toward making snow days feel calm instead of chaotic.

Preparing for a winter storm doesn’t have to be overwhelming. A few intentional steps, taken before the snow starts, can protect your home, keep your family comfortable, and give you peace of mind when the weather turns serious.

Here’s to staying safe, warm, and well-prepared this winter! ❄️
