If you’re looking for an easy, budget-friendly way to make a big holiday impact, oversized paper chains are it. They’re simple, nostalgic, and surprisingly stunning. Especially, draped over beams, stair rails, or a chandelier.
Here’s exactly how we made ours.
Supplies You’ll Need
Step 1: Cut Your Paper Strips

Start by cutting your paper into strips. Ours were slightly wider than traditional paper chains, which helped them feel more substantial and decorative.
Tip: Consistency matters more than exact size. Pick a width and stick with it so the chains look intentional once they’re hanging. I used a paper cutter with measurements to make this part really quick and easy.
Step 2: Create the Chains

Take one strip, form it into a loop, and staple the ends together. Thread the next strip through that loop, close it, and repeat.
Tip: Make a mix of short and long chains so you have flexibility when hanging.
Step 3: Decide Where to Hang

Oversized paper chains work best when they can drape and swoop.
Great places to use them:
Lay the chains out on the floor first to visualize how long they need to be.
Step 4: Hang the Chains

Use a ladder to attach one end of each chain. For higher or awkward spots, a broom handle works great to lift and guide the chains into place.
Pro tip: Have a second person to help. One person on the ladder, one on the ground. It makes everything easier and safer.
Step 5: Add Extra Details

Once the chains are up, layer in extras like:
These small details make the chains feel intentional instead of childlike.
Step 6: Step Back & Adjust

This is the fun part. Step back, look at the overall flow, and adjust the drape until it feels balanced. The beauty of paper chains is that they don’t need to be perfect. The charm is in the handmade look.
Paper chains may be simple, but when scaled up, they create warmth, movement, and a sense of nostalgia that store-bought décor just can’t match. Plus, they’re affordable, customizable, and easy to take down when the season ends.

Sometimes the best holiday decor ideas are the ones that slow you down, get your hands busy, and turn an ordinary weekend into something memorable.
